The studies undertaken by the researchers involved assessing the ability of a group of athletes to complete dynamic movements before and after participating in short foot exercises. The results obtained by the researchers indicated that short foot exercises improved the ability of the athletes to balance correctly and to move dynamically. A more recent study, completed by Unver and colleagues (2019), assessed the effect of short foot training on measures of lower extremity strength and athletic performance in athletic men. Participants completed short foot training over a period of 6 weeks prior to undertaking a series of tests to assess their lower extremity strength and athletic performance. The results obtained by the researchers indicated that, following short foot training, the athletic men had significantly improved scores for all tests when compared with pre-training scores. In addition, the post-training scores of the athletes were significantly higher than those obtained by a group of comparison subjects who had not received short foot training. The findings of this study support previous findings that short foot training can improve strength in the muscles of the foot and enhance athletic performance. Sulowska and colleagues (2016) identified the benefits of short foot training for individuals with flat feet. The findings of their studies suggested that short foot training increased strength in foot muscles and enhanced lower extremity movement patterns thereby reducing pain in individuals with flat feet. The studies identified by the above literature search indicate that there is evidence to support the use of short foot training for improving a range of measures that are of relevance to sports performers. Thus, short foot exercises are likely to benefit a range of athletic performances and are an effective component of many athletic training programs.
Short foot exercises can be one of the essential components in any athlete’s training program. Not only can they increase strength of the feet, promote correct alignment, and enhance athletic performance, but also can prevent injury to feet, ankles, knees and even hips. Recent studies, such as Hara et al. (2023), supported the idea that short foot training can improve balance in athletes. Unver et al. (2019) compared the effects of different training programs on athletic performance of young athletes. The results revealed that foot exercises resulted in higher scores in strength and agility tests compared to other training programs. (2016), also reported improvement in lower extremity biomechanics in athletes who performed short foot exercises. In addition, short foot exercises were reported to decrease pain and improve function in individuals with flatfoot and other foot related disorders. Therefore, short foot exercises are highly recommended for inclusion in any training program for athletes as well as for individuals with foot-related disorders for enhancement of athletic performance and prevention of injury.
A further benefit that can be obtained from training short foot are muscles in the foot to grow. People with flat feet in particular often suffer from foot muscles that are week and do not have sufficient support for the arch of the foot. Athletes can thus improve their athletic performance and also relieve feelings of discomfort when performing physical activities by developing their foot muscles with short foot training.
Short foot exercises can be applied in variety of sports training as well as rehabilitation settings. They enhance the athletes’ ability to perform dynamic foot functions. In order to move in many different directions quickly and be stable on different surfaces, short foot training can be beneficial. Studies by Utsahachant et al. ( 2023) and Moon & Jung (2021) support the use of short foot training to improve athletic performance in physical training for athletes. By incorporating the short foot exercises in a workout routine, the athletes can increase their athletic performance in physical training by gaining stronger and more agile foot function.
The short foot has also been shown to increase the balance of athletes who practice short foot exercises. In order to move safely and effectively through physical activity, it is necessary to have balance that will allow for controlled movements and adequate recovery time from physical activity in order to avoid injury. In addition to running, there are many different sports that require quick, precise movements of the feet. In order to participate in these sports safely and effectively, it is beneficial for athletes to practice short foot exercises in order to improve the balance of the athlete and therefore enhance their overall athletic performance. The short foot can also be beneficial for individuals who are participating in physical activity for general health and wellness, as it can improve balance and reduce the risk of injury during physical activity.
As additional benefits, short foot exercises can also be very helpful for individuals rehabilitating from a foot or ankle injury. The muscle strengthening and improved foot function provided by short foot exercises can aid the individual in returning to full activity as quickly and safely as possible. In physical therapy, short foot exercises are sometimes included in a treatment plan for a patient with a variety of conditions affecting the lower extremities. Since short foot exercises can be modified to meet the needs of the individual, they can be appropriate for nearly any athlete looking to improve the health and function of their feet.

In addition, short foot exercises can improve balance in athletes, thus enhancing performance.
In addition to trying to practice the short foot position, there are many short foot exercises that can be added to your normal training regime to improve the strength of the muscles in your feet and to improve athletic performance. The ‘towel scrunches’ are a great exercise to start with. Sit in a chair with your feet on the floor and place a towel on the floor in front of you. Scramble under the towel with your toes and pull it back towards you. Repeat this process many times throughout the day. This is a simple exercise that can be done anywhere and will help to improve the strength of your foot muscles in no time.
These exercises can be very useful in rehabilitation. For individuals suffering from flatfoot or knee pain, it is recommended to do short foot exercises on a regular basis. A recent study by Kısacık and colleagues (2021) found that short foot exercises could reduce pain in individuals with flatfoot and improve their foot function. A study by Zarali and colleagues (2024) found that strengthening the foot could prevent knee pain and therefore short foot exercises are recommended for rehabilitation of the foot.
It is very important to practice short foot exercises on a regular basis. Consistent practice is far more important than occasional practice. By incorporating short foot exercises into your daily routine you can get even better results. Many athletes practice short foot exercises in addition to their running, jumping, strength training etc. and report improved balance, power and reduced risk of injury.
Several studies found the positive effects of short foot training on athletes’ performance. The findings of a study by Unver and colleagues in 2019, on “Short foot training effects on athletic performance in young soccer players,” showed that short foot training positively affects strength and agility tests when included in the training of athletes. A study by Sulowska and colleagues from 2016 focused on the effects of short foot training on lower extremity’s biomechanics during various activities. Their findings showed improvements in lower body’s biomechanics in athletes who participated in short foot training.
When considering the practice of short foot exercises, whether to enhance athletic performance or to work towards the recovery of pain in the foot or other areas of the body, it is key to have knowledge of the typical short foot exercises. As with anything, to get the most out of short foots it is important to practice consistently, often. These simple foot exercises can be worked into a rehabilitation program and/or combined with other physical training exercises to lead to development of strong feet and the proper foot alignment for any athlete, or physically active person. Short foot exercises have been proven, through various studies, to improve the strength and enhance the athletic performance of individuals with various physical abilities.
