Choosing the Right Running Shoes

Getting the right pair of running shoes is very important for runners of all abilities, helping runners to achieve their best in their running and also to help to prevent injuries to the feet and legs of runners. The different factors that need to be considered when selecting a pair of running shoes include the fit of the shoes, the amount of cushioning in the shoes, the surface on which the shoes are to be used on and the runners style or running gait.

Each runner has a unique running style and for this reason the amount of cushioning that is ideal for one runner may not be ideal for another. For example, a runner with too much cushioning may feel as though they are running unevenly and therefore not running at their best. On the other hand, a runner with not enough cushioning may feel as though their feet are hitting the ground to harshly and as a result may experience pain in their feet and legs.

Your shoes should fit your run. If you run on trails then you need trail shoes that have good tread with deep grooves and lugs to give you good grip on uneven rough ground. If you run on roads then you will need road running shoes that are light and have cushioning in the sole to soak up the shock that hits your foot with each step. Some runners are lucky to be able to do all of their runs on one surface but for most of us this isn’t the case and we can get good performance and protection from our shoes by having different pairs for different surfaces and then choosing the correct shoe for the activity that we are doing.

There are many different types of runners, and each person’s running style is a bit different. The way in which a person’s foot hits the ground will greatly affect the type of shoe that they need. On the other hand, there are runners who overpronate and have a tendency to tilt their foot in towards the body too much, and there are also runners who underpronate and have a tendency to tilt their foot out towards the outside of the body too much. For example, runners who overpronate typically do well with a pair of shoes that have a lot of stability features and motion control in order to help guide the foot back to a straighter position. The heel is particularly prone to slipping around in a shoe while running, and for runners who overpronate (i.e. whose feet roll inwards too much while running) a firm heel counter can be particularly important.
